Metal Picture Frame FAQs
How do I measure for a metal picture frame?
Measuring your art correctly ensures a perfect fit every time. We build our metal frames based on the inside dimensions of the frame's lip, which is called the rabbet. Do not measure the outside edges of the frame.
Framing without a mat: Simply measure the exact width and height of your artwork. Your art size matches your frame size.
Framing with a mat: Your frame size will match the outside dimensions (OD) of your mat board. The inside window opening of the mat will be cut to the exact size you enter. Whether you measure to the edge of the paper or the edge of the image, we highly recommend adding a 1/8-inch overlap. This overlap is very important because it holds your paper securely in place and keeps it from falling through the window opening of the bottom mat. It also ensures your image looks perfectly even all around. If you add a second or third mat layer, their openings will automatically be calculated based on the size of the first mat's opening.
Always double-check your numbers to the nearest 1/16-inch before placing your custom picture frame order!
Do the metal picture frames arrive fully assembled?
To prevent damage during shipping and keep freight rates affordable, metal picture frames arrive packaged in 4 individual sections along with all required corner-joining hardware. Because the aluminum moulding is pre-channeled, you can assemble the full border in about 15 minutes using only a standard screwdriver.
Please note that even if you order the frame assembled, you will still need to unscrew and take the frame sections apart to safely insert your artwork, backing, and glass.
What framing components are included with a metal frame order?
A base metal frame order includes the 4 metal moulding rails and the internal hardware backing clips used to lock everything securely in place. To complete your project in one order, you can add custom plexiglass glazing and acid-free backing boards directly through our automated component selections.
Can I use multiple mat board layers inside a slim metal frame profile?
Yes. Our standard and economy metal frame mouldings feature an internal channel depth of roughly 7/8 inches. This deep channel layout gives you enough interior depth to cleanly stack up to 3 separate decorative mat board layers without pressing the artwork directly against the plexiglass.
